WRFU Fall - Match #1 - Black & Blues

ORFC posted a win in their first match of the fall season, coming from behind in the second half to beat the Milwaukee Black & Blues.  The match featured a lot of open play, dominated by some tremendous rucking and loose ball wins from Oconomowoc.  Despite falling behidn 14-3, Oconomowoc battled in the second half and put the final go-ahead try and conversion through with less than 10 minutes remaining.

Trey provided the opening score for either side when he converted a penalty midway through the first half.  Following missed opportunities, Oconomowoc allowed the B&B's to take the lead on an overloaded narrow field play late in the first, and with the conversion Milwaukee took a 7-3 lead into the break.

Partway into the second, Milwaukee once again crossed the tryline on a botched lineout when their flanker "Mule" took a tipped throw-in 22 meters and put it down in the corner.  A deft drop kick conversion provided a 14-3 lead, and the Black & Blues defensive intensity picked up for a while.

However, after several changes of possession and a long multi-phased play, Oconomowoc was able to exploit a break in the back line and post one of their own.  Trey's conversion attempt from 40 hit the upright and bounced out, leaving ORFC facing a 14-8 deficit with just over 10 minutes remaining.

After kicking away possession, the Black & Blues appeared to have an ORFC drive stopped inside the 5-meter line when the Sir called a penalty on Oconomowoc.  However, the B&B scrummie failed to come through the mark on the toe-and-go and Oconomowoc drove the ensuing scrum across the tryline, with the score finally being aput down by Kevin Gayhart under the crossbar.  Trey nailed an easy conversion to give Oconomowoc the 15-14 lead with approximately 8 minutes to play.

The ensuing 8 minutes were entirely dominated by Milwaukee break attempts and ORFC defensive stands.  The final nail in the coffin came with under 2 minutes to play when a B&B player attempted an ill-advised quick pass in on a ball in touch, resulting in an ORFC steal and drive phase, finalized when Aztec picked up the ball off a ruck and kicked it into touch for the final whistle.

All in all, both teams played tremendously, and as with any match between ORFC and the B&B's, blood, sweat and bruises were doled out by the dozen and washed down with a handshake and many cold adult beverages.

Oconomowoc is off next weekend following a forfeit by Sheboygan, and will return to action on the 19th at home against Green Bay.
