Fall Season Under Way
Join the women's team at Nashotah Park on Thursdays at 5:45 p.m. We are looking for all women interested in playing rugby. For the schedule, go to the Schedule section.
First Season Comes to an End
The Oconomowoc Rugby FC women's team ended its season on a high note in a trip to Iowa for the Rugby Daze tournament. The women, having lost the week before to Marquette, traveled fairly lightly to Decorah. Thanks to Marquette's "Gov" for being an honorary member for the weekend. Des Moines was supposed to send us eight, then six and ended up sending us NONE! A pox on their house. So, we showed to a 15s tournament with 11.
Thanks to Luther, we managed to play with 15 for all three of our games. We lost the first two matches against Gustavus and Carelton a lot to a little. Then, with three of our 11 hurt and the team on the verge of just calling it a day, something wonderful happened: we played rugby just because.
Luther, wanting to play as much as we did, gave us a bunch of players. A very fun game ended in a 20-20 tie.
The tournament saw three of our players score their very first tries for the club: Katie R., Jill and Nikki. There were no Zulus.
We ended the day by awarding the Woman of the Match cup to Gov for massive runs and great defense. We then went to a very fun after-match. Singing and beer compliment rugby.
Women Host Round Robin
In its first ever home match, the Oconomowoc Rugby FC women's team hosted the Milwaukee Scylla and Wisconsin (Madison). Oconomowoc lost both matches but did score its first-ever try vs. the Scylla and got a little better with each passing half. In the middle game, Wisconsin out-paced the Scylla to go 2-0 on the day. The after-match was very successful with tons of food at our sponsor bar, the Boathouse. Next action will be May 8 when the team travels to Iowa for the Rugby Daze tournament.
Women Play First Match Ever
The Oconomowoc Rugby FC's women's team played its first match ever on April 3 in Oshkosh vs. UW-Oshkosh. It was the first game of rugby ever for many of the women taking the field that day. Though Oconomowoc lost the "war" giving up 8 tries to none, they won many, many "battles" on the field with hard tackles and strong rucks.
The game was being played 13-a-side as Oconomowoc went up short with 10 players and Oshkosh filled us out with three players (many thanks to Na, Prock and Nuku). The first half started with Oconomowoc with the wind at its back. The first couple of rucks and scrums were pretty sloppy and probably pretty shocking for many who had never seen the elegant violence of an actual game before.
But then, something amazing happened: shock went away, and fun set in. Playing mostly defense, Oconomowoc decided that leveling people and driving them into the ground was fun. Time after time, Oshkosh women were met with big hits. Still, without possession and with the skills of the Oshkosh backline (especially center and woman of the match), they punched in three converted tries to go up 21-0 at half.
At half, we talked about possession and how to win the breakdown. The first couple of possessions resulted in multi-phased attacks the length of the field. Big north-south runs and solid rucking got us down to two meters away. But Oskhosh stiffened and repelled and countered. This played out several times, each ending with Oshkosh stealing possession and running all the way back for a try. Frustrating but expected. And through it all, the Oconomowoc hitting did not cease. There shall be many sore bodies on Easter. Final score: 56-0.
